From the grandeur of Niagara Falls to small tucked-away towns, whatever your interest, you’ll find it in Western New York. WESTERN NEW YORK: An Explorer’s Guide: From Niagara Falls and Southern Ontario to the Western Edge of the Finger Lakes (The Countryman Press, June 2005, $19.95) is the first and only guidebook that focuses specifically on the western region of the state.

This book mentions all the well-known attractions, and, in addition, it also takes you along the back roads to places not mentioned in any other travel guide; places like the unique antique shops in the tiny village of Angelica in Allegany County, the serenity of the Abbey of the Genesee in Livingston County, and the scenic beauty of diminutive Findley Lake in Chautauqua County. And let’s not forget Leroy in Genesee County, the birthplace of Jell-O.
Western New York truly has something to offer everyone, and this guide is filled with practical information to help visitors navigate their way around and decide where to stay and what to do.

For history buffs, there are hundreds of museums, big and small, along with close to 30 designated National Historic Landmarks. For wine connoisseurs, there are over 60 wineries, which are prevalent in the Finger Lakes region, as well as in Niagara and Chautauqua Counties and Southern Ontario. And that's not all; Western New York offers a wide array of theaters, art galleries, and other cultural institutions.

The region has the largest concentration of theaters in the state outside of New York City. Recreational activities abound, including fishing and boating to camping and hiking and golfing and skiing.

Author Christine Smyczynski has selected hundreds of lodgings, restaurants, attractions, and shops to fit a broad range of tastes and budgets. She spent over a year writing this guide, in which time she clocked over 600 hours traveling around the region and 1,200 hours in front of the computer typing and doing research; she also shot over 100 rolls of film to provide the photos within this guide.

In addition, this comprehensive guide includes opinionated listings of inns, B&Bs, hotels, and vacation cabins; hundreds of dining reviews, from diners to four-star restaurants; up-to-date maps; an alphabetical “What's Where” subject guide to aid in trip planning; and handy icons that point out family-friendly establishments, wheelchair access, places of special value, and lodgings that accept pets.
